Area and Perimeter Activity

Today we did an area and perimeter activity with jelly beans. In my classroom and at my school in general we oftentimes use teacher made whiteboards (I will post next the items we use to make them).  In this activity we used an Area and Perimeter Grid to learn about these two math concepts. First, I taught my 3rd graders what area and perimeter are and then we drew various shapes to practice finding the concepts. Students used the JELLY BEANS to count the square units for each term. These makeshift whiteboards are great to use for Checking for Understanding because you can have the students hold them up as a group and do a quick check to see if everyone is getting the idea.
